"Start's with" this or that letter is pretty easy trivia.
You can just use a dictionary, really. However, sometimes it's nice to not have to translate definitions into something that your residents, especially those with dementia, can easily grasp.
These games can be used for one to one visits or large groups.
Ways to modify.
1. Use pictures of the answers. Spread them out. Have participants answer the clue and find the picture.
2. If using pictures, you can play a "guess the picture" game while giving the clue.
- cover the picture
- reveal the picture bit by bit while asking the participants to guess what it is. Remind them what letter it starts with.
- use the clue given and any other clues you can think of to help them out.
3. For more cognitively impaired residents, use pictures and their words (typed in large easy to read font). Ask them to match pictures w/words.
- suggestions: hand out just the word cards or picture cards. The leader shows everyone a picture (or word) and asks them to identify it. Then encourages the participants to look at the cards in their hands and find the one that links to the leader's card.
4. I will post an independent puzzle sheet for high functioning residents later. You can make copies and hand it out for your daily puzzle. Or provide it as an activity for those times when staff is not available to lead a group.
Please feel free to leave any other suggestions in the comments.
